Finding an abandoned space in which he can pray, repent and meditate on his past transgressions, José encounters a gypsy woman. The attraction is immediate, mutual and profound. José valiantly struggles to resist her charms and is buoyed by the arrival of Micaëla, who brings a message of forgiveness from his beloved mother, which he interprets as a sign from God to resist demonic temptation.
But the charm deepens, dragging José into further acts of violence and storms of inner turmoil. Despite his best efforts he cannot break free of his unthinkable love for Carmen—nor she from him.
A strange child witnesses this surreal struggle. Carmen decides to consult the Tarot cards to understand where it is all leading and discovers only death, always death.
